Streaming in Peru: One in two Peruvians shares platform subscriptions to reduce costs

The ranking of favorite platforms has changed compared to other years, Netflix continues to lead in Peru, even so, paying more than one subscription has become very expensive for some consumers.

The rise in streaming platform prices coincides with a critical moment in the Peruvian economy. But stopping enjoying this service is not an option; sharing subscriptions to reduce costs has been proposed as a solution.

This is one of the main conclusions of the study on Streaming Consumption in Latin America 2024 developed by Sherlock Communications, which reveals that 52% of Peruvians surveyed engage in this practice.

Price hikes were cited by 23% of Peruvian respondents as the main reason for cancelling a subscription in the past year, followed by 21% who said their subscription expired and decided not to renew it, while 18% said there were too many ads. In contrast, 10% did not cancel any streaming platform and will subscribe to more platforms this year.

Regarding the motivations for watching streaming, seven out of ten (71%) Peruvians consume streaming for entertainment and to relax, while 30% are motivated to learn about new cultures, 29% watch or listen to streaming to pass the time during the commute to work, 28% use it to learn languages, and one in four respondents use it as background noise while doing other tasks or spending time with their partners.

Regarding the type of content they consume the most, 53% of Peruvians watch more series and movies, while 17% focus on music and 8% on sports or even consume two or more types of content at the same time. In the case of the preferred platform for listening to music, 54% of Peruvian respondents said they prefer Spotify over YouTube (40%).
