The opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics attracted a global television audience of some 900 million people , with NBC reporting record viewing figures in the US, organisers confirmed on Tuesday.

US broadcaster NBC, which has been criticised in some quarters for delaying the broadcast of some key events until prime time, recorded its best figures for the ceremony, according to the International Olympic Committee.

Britons have also been glued to the television, with 88 per cent of the country's population having watched some part of the Games.

"I'll start with a rather bold statement: I think bc data india London 2012 opens a whole new era in Olympic broadcasting," IOC marketing and television director Tito Lumme told reporters.

Digital coverage on the Internet and mobile phones is likely to surpass television coverage for the first time, recording more than 100,000 hours.

This is despite the fact that television coverage exceeds that of Beijing 2008 by more than 40,000 hours, now reaching 100,000 hours.

London is also expected to mark a technological milestone by offering 3D screening and testing super-high definition images not yet available in homes.

Some videos uploaded to YouTube have been removed, but Lumme said the number was fewer than expected, without giving a figure. "It's not an excessive number," she added.
