Today, thousands of visitors enjoy the park's long, wide sandy beaches, such as Mile and Half-Mile, which are rare in Maine. Enjoyed as a recreational resource, the beaches are also essential nesting areas for endangered terns and plovers and resting and feeding areas for other shorebirds. From the top of Griffith Head, a rocky promontory overlooking the park, visitors can view seascapes and see the lighthouses of Seguin Island, The Cuckolds and Hendricks Head. • Make leaf molds. Over time, crushed leaves naturally break down into a soft, finely textured substance called leaf mold. Leaf mold is rich in calcium and magnesium and holds three to five times its weight in water. It can be added to potting soil, used to top potted plants, or used as a super-premium mulch. To speed up the process, simply add a little nitrogen to the leaves before letting them sit for the winter.
