Positive vibes are nice, as are dream images, but where is the action? Appreciative Inquiry challenges participants to think in terms of next steps. Step by step mapping out the route to a dream/goal makes the change tangible. 'Step by step' is something we humans see more often than a big leap towards a dot on the horizon.
Take your shared goal, built from the results of the brainstorm. For example, better cooperation, better working conditions or more result-oriented work. The more specific you can make this description, the sooner feasible steps will emerge from it. Try to formulate these as well as possible in a group. And then comes the most important part: getting started with it in practice.
By taking the steps together, you ensure that the change is sustainable and collective. That creates a bond, that stimulates good behavior and that ultimately leads to a successful conclusion.
In his book Appreciative Inquiry (aff.) , Matthijs Steeneveld provides a list of exercises that bring a team closer to this form of collaboration. These are described briefly and powerfully, so that the reader can quickly set off in his own reality.
The target group of the book is 'trainers, team coaches and change agents', as the subtitle states. But you can interpret that last term as broadly as you like. I hope that many an enthusiastic colleague will discover points of contact in this AI approach to get the rest of the department involved in the positive flow of compliments, dream scenarios... and hard action. Because AI may be a difficult term, the underlying idea can be explained in a fairly simple exhortation: think positive.
