With all the money flowing through the internet, it’s no surprise that hotel marketing teams must look to reach a wider net through social media channels to get more direct bookings. But how much business for hotels can and is being generated directly through social media today? And more importantly, how can you tap into social media to increase your direct bookings?
Thanks to the efforts of local influencers like Elon Musk , access to Facebook and Google has accelerated more than ever before with over 3 billion people gaining online list of ghana consumer email access in 2015. This access has accelerated an already fertile e-commerce market and helped increase B2C potential dramatically. Recent projections have valued the B2C e-commerce business at over $3.2 trillion by 2020!

Amount of business generated by social networks
Various studies show that the number of social media users worldwide by 2018 will be a staggering 2.5 billion which is nearly 90% of all people online. In 2015, over 70 percent of the US population had social media profiles. According to a study done last year by SocialTimes, 28% of the time spent online is spent using social media. And nearly half of all online shoppers rely on social media when making an online purchase!
In the hotel industry alone, there are over 148.3 million reservations made online each year . The amount of online business generated through social media is so overwhelming that hotels have no choice but to focus on these channels. And hotels that do not view social media as a true direct business generation highway will be severely impacted and lose countless bookings to other properties that promote their social media channels.
First of all, know your market
74% of online adults use social media. It’s important to remember who the current adult population is. It may sound scary, but millennials make up the largest consumer market. And according to a study by Eventbrite , millennials spend $1.3 trillion annually on consumer spending in the United States alone! And 78% of millennials would rather spend money on an experience than buy something material! So generating more direct business is all about improving your hotel experience. And there’s simply no better place online to sell your hotel experience than social media! But it’s not enough to know who your market is ( millennials ) and where they are (online, on social media). You need to know HOW TO REACH THEM AND ENGAGE THEM! A whopping 1 in 5 millennials access the Internet exclusively through their mobile devices . And the majority of their time on mobile is spent on social media!
