Being a platform that offers free music with ads (or without them, through its premium subscription model ), its main competition has been, from the beginning, piracy. Wow! It's no small feat... But, despite having such a scary adversary, they managed to become a sustainable business model thanks to their focus on user experience, their ability to reach agreements with major record companies and their effort to develop advanced algorithms that allow for personalized music recommendations.

Airbnb : The democratization of tourism came with the help of this startup in 2008. Brian Chesky, Joe Gebbia and Nathan Blecharczyk believed that it would be great if anyone could rent out their homes or rooms to travelers from all over the world. The former could generate additional income, while the latter would enjoy a more economical way to travel. A win-win in every sense. By focusing on community and trust between users, they made a place for themselves in a sector as competitive as tourism. And not just any place. Today, they are a benchmark among the different accommodation options.

Uber : Travis Kalanick and Garret Camp saw the sharing economy as an ideal business model for the transportation sector back in 2009. What if they offered the world the possibility of easily requesting transportation through an APP? What if drivers could also generate income using their own vehicles? We all know the challenges this startup had to overcome to achieve its goal… Did someone say taxi? But here they are… And they have a long way to go.
