Technology of manufacturing the Olympic torch
The technology used to make the torch's outer shell has attracted widespread interest as the Games' three-day torch relay continues ahead of Friday's opening ceremony.

The torch, feiyang, is shaped like a rolled ribbon, an artistic design applied to a large curved surface.

It was made using a high-performance 3D sphere weaving machine developed by Sun Yize, a leading professor of weaving technology at Donghua University, and his team.

The 8-meter diameter machine can produce large structural parts for large vehicles such as airplanes and high-speed trains. It can also produce precision and specially shaped structural parts such as propellers and drones.

"The weaving process can be described as 'dangerous' because each moving spindle has 14 possible collisions at any given moment," Sun said.

"It's like driving on a four-lane highway with hundreds or even thousands of vehicles rapidly crossing it, not only moving at high speeds, but constantly crossing. We have to make precise calculations and hand over orbital control to prevent 'traffic accidents'."

Sun and his team discussed, researched, modified and polished the torch repeatedly to give the industrial product a soft and elegant appearance. In the end, they realized the original design using 3D weaving and automatic polishing of the outer tape.

The technology used in the project not only fills the internal gap in the field of weaving technology research, but also sets a global standard.

"Our researchers tried several mathematical models for the streamer outside the flare," Sun said.

In 2018, the team made a breakthrough in automated weaving technology for special textures. The research has been used to develop special rescue materials and communication cables.

It helped China's self-developed manned submersible Jiaolong complete deep-sea diving tests of 5,000 and 7,000 meters, and helped the scientific research vessel Kexue (Science) successfully complete a comprehensive inspection of the tropical western Pacific Ocean.
