Olympic Games usher in golden era of hydrogen industry development
"The Beijing Olympic Games uses 816 hydrogen vehicles as the main transportation force, which is the largest number in international sports events, with the largest number of application scenarios," said Wu Zhiquan, deputy director of the transportation department of Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology.

He added that with three hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and the first fueling station under construction, the 2008 Beijing Olympics represent the "zero to one" movement of China's hydrogen industry.

Wu said 312 hydrogen-powered vehicles, which emit only clean water, are currently in use in the Beijing and Yanqing competition zones, and a total of 42.04 tons of hydrogen have been consumed in the two competition zones since the opening on Feb. 2 to Monday.

Beijing Huanyu Jinghui City Gas Technology Co., the main supplier australia email address of hydrogen energy for the games, produces and extracts hydrogen from "green electricity" generated from photovoltaic and wind power, said Zhang Yan, deputy general manager of the company.

"Our company can supply 1.5 tons of hydrogen to several filling stations by the Olympics, which is about half of the total hydrogen consumption," Zhang said.

One of the main hydrogen buses in operation was jointly developed by Chinese automaker Foton and Japan's largest automaker Toyota, as well as a number of Chinese hydrogen battery and engine developers.

“The 12-meter-long bus named Ouhui can avoid emitting 57.86 kg of carbon dioxide every 100 kilometers. This results in a reduction of 115.72 kg of carbon emissions every day,” said Liu Jihong, vice president of Foton Motor Group’s AUV division.

The company's research and development team has overcome technological challenges, including starting cars in extremely cold weather conditions, on slippery roads due to snow and ice, and on steep slopes, Liu said.
