According to the most recent published data, there are over 51 million internet users in Italy , 83% of whom are also active on social media channels, which are confirmed to be particularly loved by internet users in our country.

The use of mobile devices will grow in 2023, compared to 2022, with over 81 million connections and a penetration of 138.7%. Greater number of connections, but also more time spent on mobile devices, reaching a percentage of 50.8% compared to the total time spent online.

But what are the main activities carried out online?
Always referring to the data in the Casaleggio Associati report, 44.9% of users declare that they use the web to search for products and brands . Search for information, but not only: the data relating to users who choose to buy online

The number of users who choose to buy online is growing, as is the turnover of the entire sector, whose annual growth estimate stands at around 27%, with a value of 80.55 billion euros.

The protagonists of this positive trend are marketplaces (+55%), followed by players in the world of travel and tourism (+42%) and pet care (+37%). A slight setback, also due to the increase in inflation, for the electronics sector (-3.5%) and jewelry, whose decrease is measured above all in terms of items sold.

As has already happened in many other sectors, the use of artificial intelligence algorithms to support data-driven strategies and business models is also having a positive impact on the eCommerce world and involving the various players at 360°, from logistics and supply chain management to communication activities and marketing campaigns.

But let's take a closer look at this phenomenon.

The data disclosed in the report show how companies (part of the sample interviewed) that have already chosen to adopt AI-based solutions, have done so to support activities such as content creation (think of the use of Chat GPT), data analysis , automation of advertising campaigns and customer care service . Only 10% declare that they use AI-based solutions for customer journey personalization .
