The history of Black Friday began much earlier than people think. The day after Thanksgiving was the unofficial start of the Christmas season since the late 19th century. The use of the name to refer to the day after Thanksgiving began in Philadelphia in the 1950s.

At the time, the term was used internally by city police officers in reference to the large crowds of pedestrians and vehicles that annually clogged Philadelphia's business district on that day. The crush of people and cars that took to the streets on that day resulted in chaos in the city and required all officers to be on duty to maintain order and manage the chaos.



The first published use of the term Black Friday was in a 1966 advertisement by a stamp dealer named Earl Apfelbaum located in Philadelphia. However, the term remained mostly regional until the early 2000s, with a surge in usage in the 1980s in other regions.
