LEGO announces its new blocks with Braille system

Post by sakib30 »

For the brand, playing has the power to change lives and that is why they developed this initiative to make their toys more inclusive.

In time for World Blind Awareness Month in October, LEGO is announcing its new Braille bricks. Until now, the LEGO Foundation had distributed the kits free of charge, as part of a pilot program, to organizations specializing in the education of visually impaired children.

Why Braille blocks?
The bricks have been specially designed to help blind and visually impaired children and adults learn Braille. Each of the 287 LEGO Braille bricks is moulded with studs to represent a different letter or number in the Braille alphabet.

These special bricks come in five colours (white, yellow, green, red and blue). And they remain fully compatible with existing LEGO toy products. The LEGO Braille Bricks set also includes two baseplates, while the packaging features Braille printing.

To complement the play experience and support the development of pre-Braille skills, the group offers a range of supportive ‘play starters’ on LEGO.com that will guide players on how to orient, match and stack the bricks through games such as Rock, Paper, Scissors, which can be played by both fully and partially sighted players.

Transforming lives through play
Rasmus Løgstrup, LEGO Group Lead Designer on LEGO Braille bricks, comments: “Play has the power to change lives; when children play, they learn vital lifelong skills, so we were thrilled by how well LEGO Braille bricks have been received in educational settings. We’ve been inundated with thousands of requests to make them more widely available, so we knew we had to make it a reality!”

During the original pilot program, LEGO Braille bricks were tested in languages including Danish, Norwegian, English and Portuguese, German, Spanish and French, including special characters. To start, the kit will be available for sale for $89.99 on September 1, 2023, with pre-orders starting on August 24; Italian, German and Spanish versions will follow in early 2024.
