In 1989, Congress declared October the official month to honor the fight against domestic violence.
An important aspect of coping with any type of loss is for individuals and families to share their grief with others who have experienced similar losses. Therefore, Domestic Violence Awareness Month was established not only to raise awareness, but also to provide a space for those affected by domestic violence to share their voices and stories.
In 2024, the National Domestic Violence Awareness Project continues with the theme of “Healing, Control and Center.” Together, we will engage in conversations about how we can work together as a community to heal the devastating effects of domestic violence, commit to staying connected to one another with compassion, and work to focus our attention on those who are still experiencing the impacts of domestic violence today.
