Distinctive scents in hotels: Love them or hate them?

Your nose isn't lying – hotels are starting to send scents into rooms. If you suffer from a sensitive nose, avoid the worst offenders with these tips. VPC

The first thing Sheila Haas noticed when she checked into a Los Angeles apartment hotel recently was the scent: a sweet, metallic fragrance wafting through her room. “ It gave me an asthma attack ,” she said.

Complaints to the manager were met ghana email list
with a dismissive gesture. Too bad, a representative told her, “ but you didn’t pay for an odor-free room .”

“We had to stay somewhere else,” says Haas, who lives in Boynton Beach, Florida.

It's not your imagination. Something smells in an increasing number of hotels. And while it's sometimes intolerable for guests with scent sensitivities, like me, or asthma, like Haas, the reason behind the "scenting" is sweet — or so they say.

The signature scent of the Four Seasons Hotel Chicago blends local violets , water lilies and citrus with hints of cedarwood for “an unforgettable finale that greets guests upon arrival,” says Carly Fowler, a management manager at Air Aroma, a company that provides the trademarked fragrances.

At the Irvine Hotel in Southern California , “ we lightly pump a pleasant scent of diluted floral notes of jasmine and lily, mixed with creamy nuances of oriental flowers and a hint of musk, amber, pure woods and vanilla into our public spaces ,” says general manager Jeroen Quint.
The Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa fills its air with fig, bergamot, jasmine and freesia, “to convey a sense of place,” says Tina Hingle, the hotel’s marketing manager . The right scent, she adds, “can evoke warm memories, relax the body and calm the mind. Controlled use of scents can create a desirable and welcoming atmosphere.”

No one really knows. “A number of hotels, from chain hotels to boutique hotels, are scenting these days,” says Lior Azachi, head of business development at Bioluxal, a scent supplier. For example, all Holiday Inns worldwide are using the same scent in their lobbies. In the United States, there are at least 1,000 properties that smell exactly the same.

A more interesting question: Why are hotels pumping scents into public areas, and even guest rooms? Guests at the Las Vegas Hilton spent 50 percent more time playing slot machines when the air around them had been dosed with a floral scent, according to Haha Lung and Christopher Prowant's book Mental Dominance . A Washington State University study found that exposing shoppers to the scent of oranges led them to spend 20 percent more than under any other circumstances.
