Chinese phones make Africans talk
Manufacturers like Xiaomi, Huawei and Tecno have earned praise for their youth-focused offerings, as their models can shoot high-definition video, play games and boast quality speakers.
Ramadhan Hassan, Marketing Manager at Xiaomi Kenya, said since the company opened its first online store in Kenya in 2019, its products have taken hold in the market.
By opening online and offline stores, the company has managed to expand its product range. According to Hassan, customers can now buy TV boxes, smart switches, smart lights and a variety of WiFi accessories.
“The focus on innovation to meet the diverse needs of consumers has helped the brand grow in popularity among young people,” he said.
A marketing manager said that in the last month alone, Xiaomi has launched more models in the East African market, including 5G-enabled phones.

“Some of the products, such as the Xiaomi 12 series, are aimed at the high end of the market, while others are in demand at the entry and mid-range levels,” Hassan said.
He also notes that the average price of Xiaomi phones is 75 percent cheaper than competitors.
Martin Githinji, who lives in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, said he likes Chinese tech products for their innovation and prices.
"I use a lot of Chinese products. I used Oppo phones for a long time. Now I have switched to Tecno. I have also used Huawei phones," Githinji told Xinhua.
Githinji, a 30-year-old digital content creator, said the emergence of Chinese products has helped his work.
Kavins Adere, a Kenyan international relations scholar, believes Chinese companies are succeeding in Africa because they are targeting trends that young people are following.
